Program Description

Volunteer Job Description

Title: Trail Sentinel     

Purpose: Trail Sentinels assist the Forest Preserve District by providing information to the Police Department to maintain a safe environment for recreational users on the trails.

Department and Site: LaPorte Road Bike Trail, Old Plank Road Trail, Heritage Trail, Centennial Trail, Joliet Junction Trail and Rock Run Trail.

Duties and Responsibilities:
€     Monitor safety conditions on trails
€     Deter crime be mere presence
€     Report unusual activities
€     Disperse District Information to Trail users

Qualifications: Trail Sentinels need to have a bicycles, skates or skis in good working condition, and be in good physical condition. Individuals are required to have good oral communication skills and work well people. Sentinels will be ask to submit to a background check are expected to work regularly during the peak user seasons
.
Time Commitment: At least four hours a week.

Training: All Trail Sentinels are required to complete orientation and training. An overview briefing of the responsibilities of the Police Department, review of Police command structure, reporting requirements, and the philosophy of "voluntary compliance" will be covered. Volunteers will be provided with the information regarding the trail to be monitored, special items of interest, date of assignment, and method of contacting sworn personnel for incident reporting.

Uniforms: Standard volunteer uniform articles will be issued. Uniforms are to be worn when monitoring the bike trail, working at special events, workdays, or whenever in contact with the public.

Benefits: Volunteers receive ongoing recognition from their supervisor and other employee staff, and are invited to an annual volunteer appreciation party in April after the year in which they have volunteered as a Prairie People Volunteer. As much as possible, volunteer career ladders have been established to give volunteers the opportunity to grow in their volunteer positions by increasing their skills and responsibility.
